New York City police began raiding the Occupy Wall Street encampment in Lower Manhattan's Zuccotti Park early Tuesday.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's office ordered the protesters out of the park but said they would be able to return, the Associated Press reported.

The Occupy group's website carried the headline "NYPD is raiding Liberty Square," the former name of the park, while video streaming on the site showed police encountering demonstrators.

U.S. Mayors Crack Down on Occupy Wall Street Camps Amid Violence

Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Mayors from Oakland, California, to Portland, Oregon, ordered police to shut down camps allied with the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, saying they had deteriorated from a protest against income inequality into a backdrop for crime and violence.

Demonstrators in New York intend to mark the two-month anniversary of the movement this week with plans to "shut down Wall Street" and "occupy the subways." Officials elsewhere lament that deaths, sexual assaults, drug dealing and theft threaten public safety in tent cities nationwide.

"The people who originally founded the encampments are either no longer there or no longer in control," Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said yesterday in a telephone interview. "In part of clearing the camp, we moved a lot of the homeless -- they were about half of the residents."

OAKLAND, California — Police decked in riot gear and armed with tear gas cleared out Oakland's anti-Wall Street encampment early Monday, the latest law enforcement crackdown amid complaints around the country of health and safety hazards at protest camps.

The raid at the Occupy Oakland camp, one of the largest and most active sites in the movement, came a day after police in Portland, Ore., arrested more than 50 people while shutting down its camp amid complaints of drug use and sanitation issues.

Capt Ray Lewis Joins OWS Protest,Gives Message to NYPD and Slams The Greed 1% from Zuccotti Park

Retired Philadelphia Police Captain Ray Lewis was in Zuccotti Park last night with the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Mr. Lewis showed up in uniform carrying signs a pair of signs imploring New York City cops to join the protests. "NYPD Don't Be Wall Street Mercenaries," one read. Mr. Lewis was interviewed on one of the Occupy Wall Street livestreams at about two this morning. He was sharply critical of the NYPD's conduct during their raid on the protest encampment Tuesday. "This bullrush–what happened last night is totally uncalled for," Mr. Lewis said.

A Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson confirmed to the Observer that Mr. Lewis was a captain prior to retiring in 2004. He was photographed at the protests yesterday afternoon as demonstrators ringed Zuccotti Park in the wake of their eviction.

I seriously doubt that any of the places so far attacked by riot police were any different than the ones in SF and Santa Rosa.  And in that there were far more of a threat to themselves then to anyone else, much less 'the system' - and given enough time entropy would collapse them of it's own accord.  But, I think power is pretty scared these day (they know they are running on empty), so they thought if they sent out their heavily armed thugs chosen for their psychopathic personality that it would at least send a message of 'fear' and comply.

Keep on moving, nothing to see here.  And keep on shopping.

FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
