So I've not had top surgery (still pre-T too), but I was wondering about tattooing over top surgery scars.  That can be done right?   It's not bad for you?  Has anyone ever done this or seen/known someone who did this?

I've just been thinking about how much I would not want scars at all.  Of course, that would also be a weird place to put a tattoo, wouldn't it?  I don't know what kind of a tattoo would fit just right in that area either.

Anyone have any ideas/comments?

What Jayr said (I was gonna link to the first one he posted but he beat me).

Another option is "scar camouflage" where they match your regular skin tone and tattoo it over the scar tissue... search in on Google or Google Images for more info. That's what I plan to do if I'm not eligible for the peri-areolar method.

It can be done. I've seen pictures of guys that had it done. I don't think it can be bad for you, unless you get hep C or something. One guy had a bar of flames, and it looked crappy to me. Another guy I rember had the entire upper part of his torso covered.

You can also get scar camouflage tattooing done, and but if you get a tan it will look weird.

When I was younger and considering doing this I couldn't come up with anything good. Now I just plan on letting my chest hair cover it.

I was considering doing this too, but I got to not being able to fathom what kind of tattoo I would get there. It's kind of an awkward spot. I heard scar camouflage only worked for scars lighter than your skin tone and not risen, though.

i wouldnt get a tattoo on my chest to cover my scars. i dont care if they are seen, but i do invision myself with a chest tattoo at some point but not covering my scars.

I might get a chest tattoo one day, but not to cover the scars but just cause I like tattoos. ;)

I think tribals could work fine, you could always do a partial covering (one side + shoulder for example) and then if someone askes you about your other scar, I think I once read that the scar looks like what you get when you've had a collapsed lung? And else tell people you don't want to talk about it.

But, yea, tribals. Better, Maori or Pacific tribals, though you would need to like the style ofcourse haha.

My worry is in the opposite direction. I have a chest tattoo and I worry about what will happen to it after top surgery. :(

I'm already pretty tattooed...so far most of my arms and a few on my legs. One of the many reasons I can't wait for top surgery is so I can finally tattoo that part of my body.  I've wanted to for as long as I've been getting tattooed, but I don't feel confident enough about getting it tattooed until I'm post-op.  I'm planning on getting a large chestpiece.  I'm not doing it just to cover up scars, but I figure it will be a nice added bonus.

I think figuring out a tattoo that will only cover the scar area might be kind of difficult, but if you find a good tattoo artist, they can definitely work with whatever basic idea you have.

I reckon you could do a stomach tatt of an angel, eagle or dragon/other flying thing with upstretched wings that touch the pecs.  Maybe something like that would hide the scars.

I'll want to cover the scars. I'd like the convenience of not answering any more questions from strangers than I already put up with. If my chest hair doesn't come in thick enough, I'll figure out some kind of tattoo scheme. I don't think I'd go for scar camouflage.

Kreuzfidel's idea is a good one to start brainstorming with.

I want to do Shenron throughout my whole torso @_@... Dragon Ball Z was my favorite show as a kid :'P. If I lose my kidney, I also want a Portal tattoo where my kidney showing where my kidney use to be with most likely a vacancy sign :'D! I know what you're thinking, people this nerdy should not reproduce ;_;.

I think scar camouflage would be a good option....you don't want to hide your new chest altogether :)

Uh oh.  Is this true?  That would kind of ruin that plan, lol.
Does anyone know of anyone with chest surgery who got scar camouflage?  So I know it can be done, and possibly what it looks like.

This doesn't answer anyone's questions, but I found it while googling and it looks cool:

I worked in a tattoo shop for a while and I had always heard the artists say that it depends on what kind of scar you have and how old the scar was. The older the better. Scar tissue is fickle when it comes to taking ink and it's not guaranteed that it will hold the ink at all. I would make sure the artist was experienced when it comes to tattooing scar tissue. They have to go slower over the scar tissue since the skin is thin and damaged already to keep from doing more damage to your skin.

I really like the idea of covering up scars with tattoos. I have a half sleeve that was done over some old chicken pox scars with no problem holding the ink.
