Campus controversy started over opinion article {Fixed Link}

Dear readers,

A recent editorial started a rather large controversy here at Dixie State College. Last week we published an opinion piece by Christa Roberts titled "People should be open to others' type of 'normal'" in which Roberts, a man, expressed a desire to be a girl. There were e-mails sent to all faculty and staff Tuesday expressing personal opinions about the article. We at the Dixie Sun felt the need to specify what exactly an editorial is. According to www.dictionary.com, an editorial is defined as an article in a newspaper or periodical that is the opinion of the writer, whether that be the publisher, editor(s) or reporter.

Anything written on an opinion page is just that: an opinion. Every reader will have his or her own viewpoint on the article and decide whether he or she likes it. It is the writer's right to be able to compose an editorial of what he or she believes, and it is also the right of the reader to agree or disagree with the writer's standpoint.
