Zoé Héran as Laure / Michaël

The premise of Céline Sciamma's Tomboy is a simple one. Ten-year-old Laure moves to a new town and, in the spirit of invention, introduces herself as Michael to her neighbor, Lisa. Her friendship with the neighborhood boys as well as her burgeoning romance with Lisa are threatened, however, by the end of summer and the approach of school, where all things must come to light. For some it's a reality of a non-gender normative childhood, for others (myself included) an awesome, if not completely well-thought-out, fantasy. It's personal. It's political. Predictably, Sciamma's ambiguous look at gender in childhood left me with some questions of my own.
