A respected solicitor was pushed under the wheels of a Tube train in front of horrified commuters by a transexual she had befriended, the Old Bailey heard today.

Sonia Burgess, who in her professional life was known as David, was herself a gender variant whose double life was well known to her family and friends.

The killer, Senthooran Kanagasingham, was then living as a woman and met Sonia at a bar, the jury was told.

At the time he was known as Nina and would spend hours at Ms Burgess's flat in Shaftesbury Avenue pouring out her troubles, the court heard. But their friendship became strained as Kanagasingham became increasingly "needy."

David Burgess, 63, known as Sonia, died after falling under a Piccadilly Line train at King's Cross Underground station on Oct 25 last year.

Senthooran Kanagasingham, 35, known as Nina, went on trial yesterday charged with his murder.

He has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, but claims he did not intend to kill Mr Burgess because he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the incident.

A man has told a court how he grappled a transgender person to the floor after seeing her push a leading human rights lawyer under a Tube train.

Sonia Burgess, 63, died during the rush hour at King's Cross in October 2010.

Senthooran Kanagasingham - who is also known as Nina - denies murder but admits manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

Darren Clare, from Bristol, said he was going home after a business trip with a colleague when he saw the incident.

HUNDREDS of evening rush-hour commuters looked on in horror as an "elegantly dressed lady" died under the wheels of an incoming Tube train at King's Cross station in October last year.

The victim, a much admired and acclaimed human rights lawyer, was happiest wearing female clothing and was known by family and friends as Sonia, jurors at the Old Bailey heard this week.

Award winning solicitor David Burgess, a 62-year-old father of three, was violently pushed from the platform and killed in a deliberate attack by a person he had befriended and tried to help.
