MELBOURNE: Recent state funding means a dedicated centre for transgender Melburnians is a step closer. Michael Magnusson found out just how close.

It's a milestone: funding for youth suicide prevention programs announced last month for seven GLBTI groups included the first ever to a transgender organisation.

The Baillieu Government's total package of $4.5 million dollars included non-recurrent funding of $146,000 over four years to the Zoe Belle Gender Centre (ZBGC) for suicide prevention initiatives for young gender-questioning people. ZBGC is an online resource for Victoria's sex and gender diverse community and its spokesperson, author Tom Cho, says securing funding was a major win. It was based on anecdotal evidence gathered by ZBGC and a study on transgender health.
