So, usually I have my hair a bit longer...not to shoulder, but about 3-4 inches long. And I'm almost always perceived as female. I'm 22, and as female people always think I'm 25 or so. But I recently shaved my head, which resulted in some lulz yesterday. I was at the grocery store with my grandma and this lady was offering some fresh fruit samples. So, as my grandma headed to the meat department, I stop and look at the fruit. I'm about the grab a sample, and she says "Oh, I just need your mama to come over here." I thought she meant to sample fruit, so I looked at my grandma, and said "I don't think she wants any." And she said "No no, I need your mama to give permission for you to eat it in case you have allergies, anyone 16 or under needs parental permission." I looked at her like she was completely insane, and then it hit me - she thought I was a young boy. So I said "I'm 22." And she said "ARE YOU??" and put her face right up against mine in shock, haha. And she laughed but still looked like she was in disbelief, so I grabbed the little fruit sample and bee lined over to my grandma.
I was chuckling about it the whole time in the store. Passing as male was definitely cool, since it rarely happens, but the age issue threw me for a total loop. Ever since I was 14, people have perceived me as an "over 18" woman which has its benefits. I felt so torn. As much as it hurts to be read as female when I'm not, I never realized how much I enjoyed being perceived as an older, and thusly more mature person. so the hair is definitely going to grow out now!
