I was on depo for a couple of years. I had no periods at all, but I had insane mood swings the first few days after each shot. I did gain weight, but not a lot and I'm sure I could have prevented it with exercise. I wouldn't personally go back on it because I feel like it changed my personality too much. Everyone is different, though.

I'd love to know more about depo but I heard it messes up hormones too but then again these were women's experiences, not transguys. So that might affect it?

Theoretically, no.  Differences in mood swings, quite possibly since there's evidence (mostly anecdotal due to lack of formal scientific study) that our brains don't function well with the hormones we naturally produce, but the other side effects all seem to be similar.  Like I said, I was on Provera last year.  I bled for over 3 weeks straight, and wanted to kill myself randomly throughout the day.  Prior to taking it I hadn't been suicidal in years.  It definitely screwed with my hormones in a bad way.  I had always had bad periods and endometriosis.  Provera is what my doctor prescribed to attempt to alleviate said issues, but it made it way worse, as did all hormonal contraceptives I tried.

Provera (and 'Depo', which only denotes that it's the injectable form) is NOT, and I cannot stress this enough, a hormone blocker, and doesn't really suppress female hormones throughout the body.  It reduces certain types of estrogen, the ones responsible for ovulation and menstruation cycles, but it's in no way a true blocker.  It's actually an anti-androgen too.  Provera's actual drug name is medroxyprogesterone.  It's the strongest of the progestins, and was used (less frequently now) by some endo's in MTF patients to block testosterone and aid in feminization.  If your aim is masculinization and you're able to start male hormones soon, I don't recommend pumping yourself full of more (and very potent!) female hormones first.

I decided to hold off on depo for now. I've got a long time before I make any decisions like these anyways  :-\

I want to finally save my sternum from being sandwiched between two globular masses of unattractive tissue.
Please, oh, please.

I just wanted to chime in and say I've had massive problems from all kinds of birth control - depo being the biggest culprit.

Huge weight gain, mood swings, a 6 month bleed on two separate occasions, doctors insisting I come off the depo because it's made my bones brittle, and also I was told my fertility was shot because of the long term depo use....which later turned out to fix itself a few years after coming off it...hence my daughter  :P
