It is a well known and unfortunate fact that gender variant people of all types are more prone to suicide. That is one of the reasons gender therapy is mandated for those who are considering transition.
The problem with the article is that the authors compare MtFs (presumably) denied BA to the general public to advocate for a change in the country's socialized medicine policies. In fact, they should compare the suicide rate to all other MtFs. I don't have the data in front of me, but I recall reading somewhere that about 40% of all transgendered people have attempted suicide. So the underlying problem with the BA-denied group in Sweden may have little to do the denial of BA, and more to do with other factors.
I think it was about 42% that have attempted suicide at alteast one point. However, according to another report just the other day which name I unfortunately have forgotten, the number was 50%.
In any case, I thought breast implants for MTF's in Sweden was covered by the State? Atleast that was the case the last time I checked, so either they have changed the rule because every TS suddenly wanted Pamela Anderson-racks, or, the study perhaps applies to those not having gone fully the legal way, hence lacking the needed papers for free BA. OR, which is a big possibility, the T-subjects have not gone the "whole way" and therefore been denied medical help, as it is a fact that the medical process in Sweden is only free for those intending to have a full change including SRS- Not those that only want hormones and/or cosmetical procedures but no SRS.
The research begs the question if this issue is a newer one or an old one. If it is a newer one, it is safe to assume that the cause is the current silly fashion that says that breast implants is a "must", although the breasts are already fully normal in shape.
For instance, would these people still have felt this suicidal during the 1920's when it was fashionable for women to have small breasts?
It is also of interest to know how big the average breastsize is of the average MTF that is depressed because of its size.
Regarding the woman in the article that were denied implants, I would like to know more about her and what was the reason for her being denied the procedure.
Was it a medical cause, perhaps? Or a legal cause because she perhaps did not have all the papers in order?
Regardless, it is ofcourse unfortunate and I hope she was not floored about it.
It would be most helpful to know the causes for those being denied implants, as all there otherwise are, is guesses.
