Stolen iPad

We're both just sick.  When I left for my therapy appointment I left out personal iPad next to my work laptop.

One of the few members of my wife's family that is actually accepting of us was over today.  She brought her son with her.  When I went back in there to work an hour ago it wasn't there.

When I went on iCloud and did a find my iPad.  It found ALL of our Apple devices except for Jeneva's iPad.  But mysteriously there was a new iPad on our list called Gill that had it's location services turned off.

My son was in that room with her son after I left and he said that they saw it and then her son wanted to go out to the car.

I am not aware of ANY way that someone could have added a new iPad to our account.  Nor do I know of any way for ours to magically dropped off.  She denies that either of them took it, but it never left the house and they were the only ones over here.

Unfortunately both of them do have past records of this type of thing.

We're not sure what to do now, but we're afraid we have to call the police so if they try to steal bank account info

Tough call because it's family, and accepting family at that...but you have every reason to call the police and report that the device was stolen. You'll be asked who was in and out of the house, and the police will take it from there. If it turns out that your relatives took it, do you really need "allies" like that in your life?

family and best friends can show they have no scruples.
personally I'd call family anstell parents to check son's room for Ipad.
may losefriends but if it gets the kid sorted out then it will be worth it.

We did call them and interestingly the first time her son answered, but he left pretty much right away and his mom didn't know where he was for an hour or so.  Both of them deny they took it.

The bad part is it could have been either of them because they both have a history of shoplifting.  They were the only two visitors today and if it was a break in they would have taken my work laptop sitting next to it (worth much more $) and the projector in the back of the room and that isn't counting the rest of the house and other things that would have been grabbed.

I know for certain that it has been stolen and not lost because not only did the name change and the location services, but someone also deleted out our contacts.  I know I didn't take it to my appointment partially because I never do, but also because it is a just a touch too big to easily fit in my purse so I have to wrestle with it to reclose and I had it open when I paid. 

*SIGH*, that was going to be our primary communication while I was in Chicago.  I guess I'll have to take a much heavier laptop.

We did find out that since the case and iPad together are over $500 that it does actually count as a felony so we're hoping sharing that info will help spur a confession. 

Maybe it will turn up at a pawn shop, but.....

Make sure you have a copy of the MAC address of the iPad. It's your proof of ownership.
Irrespective of how people rename devices, you can't alter the MAC address which is accessable via setting.

Hope it turns up before it's put to the wrong use

We lose $500+ and one or two sleepless nights because we both just feel sick to think that someone took something from inside our home and even worse it was someone we welcomed into our home and worst of all that it was family.

We're trying our best to not make this any worse, but if the mother doesn't quit calling us then we're going to have to report phone harassment.  She has been told we aren't interested in continuing to hear her rant, but isn't stopping her calls.  I understand that she wants to believe her son, but he does have a history of trouble and "finding" stuff.  It is exceptionally illogical to assume that someone broken in without any sign of damage in the whole hour no one was home around 3:30.  There are only 5 entrances.  3 garage style doors with power openers which a person couldn't open manually.  And then the front and back doors that both have a deadbolt.  Given that I know it was in the house and I know it was stolen the only reasonable explanation is that one of them took it.

To be honest both my wife and I want to just move on.  It is gone and nothing we can do is going to make it come back and to keep tearing ourselves apart constantly checking the find app and playing what if is killing us.

Just an update, the sherrif's department called Shannon yesterday and it turns out they are taking this seriously. Evidentially they want the son because he can give them some of the local dealers so they are going to try and scare it out of him. It probably doesn't get our iPad back, but I'd gladly give that much to take a couple of dealers off the streets.

His mother has also apologized for everything she said to Shannon.

On a side note even though we shouldn't have we did buy a new one. The risk of hurting myself after surgery trying to carry my behemoth work laptop or even Shannon's AirBook + accessories made us break down. I put it on a 90 days payment and since I can't have laser for a while (or more work on my leg sleeve) we made it work in our budget.

Thanks for the update. I've been wondering what was happening. I'm glad the theft is being taken seriously. You might still get the device back...although I don't know what you would do with two.

I'd gladly give that much to take a couple of dealers off the streets.

I'd give a truck full of iPads for that, but what they are asking for could get the kid killed, and the police don't care about that.
