Is it the same in your country? I'm originally from a muslim country who is now under Asylum in Europe. Whether back home or here in Europe people associate transsexuals to prostitution. It's almost like the word 'Transsexual=Prostitute'. In my country, they all fell sadly in sex trade due to discrimination, the middle ones were entertainers as singers, dancers but I would NEVER see anyone in offices or on intellectual level like I do see many in USA. I was HEAVILY DISCRIMINATED every time I tried to find a job in spite of my high educational qualifications. Here in Europe it's a bit same but the bullying on the streets is much much lesser or quasi-inexistant I would say, but we're still associated to prostitution. I find it very unfair society thinks we're only good to be in the sex trade. How is it going on in your country? I wonder what can we do to fight against this!

Kia Ora HP,

::) In my 'opinion'...................................

::) Sadly the sex industry is for the most part one of the only industries that does not discriminate against trans-people...And for many it was/is the only means of surviving ['survival money'] plus it was for some [and no doubt still is] a quick way to get money together for surgery...

::) And just like cis women, there are trans-women who sleep around, but for some trans-women it is a way to affirm their 'female' gender identity that is, to be seen by some men as desirable, sexy, and this no doubt makes them feel more 'like a woman' so to speak...[Mind you some may just like 'sex' and plenty of it]

::) Some media outlet's portrayal of trans-women can at times add to this misconception...

::) And if I remember rightly you yourself have said people you know have said you 'dress' like a prostitute-this does not remove the misconception that you want to dispel, [Even if you are not one...You are 'guilty' by association, be it if only in 'dress sense']...However in saying this I do believe one should be able to wear what one feels comfortable wearing, but in doing so one must also reap what they sow [or in this case 'sew']...

Well making sure that you don't dress like hooker, act like a hooker, or trade sex for money.

Work to make those places more like California or other liberal and more tolerant places, and less like themselves, but that's not easy.  But I'm pretty sure you have to start by marginalizing religion as a social construct.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Too late.

I never associated transsexuals with prostitution any more than I associate all marginalized classes to stuff like prostitution. I personally never associated transsexuals with anything more exciting than off-kilter body types until I started studying the issue.

Incidentally, there was no way in hell I would trade sex for money as a girl. For me as a guy it's totally negotiable. Not that I do it or have done it, but the fact that I don't think I'd feel shame or stigma about it anymore says something about either gender, me, or transition.

Because:

"1. I dress like a prostitute and wear too slutty clothes." It happens a lot, just search an image site.

Also, for many MTFs prostitution is an acceptible source of income, mainly to pay for hormones etc...

If being transexual prevents you from getting a job, the smartest thing you could do is work as your birth gender, transition alongside it.

+1 :D

I did this film show for Halloween and dressed like a prostitute. My 51 yr old boyfriend had to keep me away from outside because men were giving me so much attention. I have really long legs, etc

It was the "Crying Game" for many men that night. LOL

once there where a debattation about prostitution and a women who had been transphobia and there where alot of fuss about it, where people where asking why transexuals even where to be in that debattation and the answer where that there where MANY transexuals who become prosituted.
its manly because in many countrys its hard/imposible to have usual job if your transexual.
