Italian newspapers on Wednesday published a conversation between Mr Corona and Max Scarfone, another photographer, who said he had taken pictures of "a very important person in politics" in his car near some transsexual prostitutes. It quickly emerged that prosecutors in the southern city of Potenza suspected that Mr Sircana was the intended victim of a blackmail scheme linked to these alleged pictures.

However, Mr Scarfone said on Thursday he had taken no pictures of Mr Sircana with transsexuals, his conversation with Mr Corona had been mere playful talk, and he had never blackmailed anyone. Mr Corona was arrested on Monday.
