Minimum age lowered for starting hormone treatment for gender identity disorder

(Mainichi Japan) January 13, 2012

The youngest age at which hormone treatment for people with gender identity disorder (GID) can begin was lowered from 18 to 15 by the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology on Jan. 12.

The decision was motivated by the fact that many young people with the disorder are so tormented by it that they attempt suicide or stop going to school.
