Ask Matt: Do Both Trans Men and Trans Women Prefer Female Partners?

A reader writes: "I'm a trans woman. Recently I have wondered why there seems to be a much greater percentage of trans women who seek relationships with women than trans men who seek relationships with other men.

"Stephen Ira's (Warren Beatty and Annette Bening's son) story of having a boyfriend started me thinking. He is the only trans guy who I ever heard of having a boyfriend. The couple of trans men I know would never consider a relationship with a male.

"Now I know I can get into a basic male-bashing rant, but could there be other factors I'm missing? Any ideas?"
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde

Without going into fear that I may be stereotyping but I have seen a large majority of trans women who are into women only. All of my trans mtf friends on FB but two are trans lesbians (I have 73 mtf trans friends on my fb). It's curious but I don't really take my time from my schedule to think why this is.

I know what the author is referring to, and I have since long noticed the similar, although I wouldn't take it as a general applying rule.
I think there are several reasons for this.
One of those reasons, is sometimes rather a political reason rather than a matter of actual Orientation, as many MTF's simply have very bad experiences from males and therefore not seldomly refuse to give them any time, hence deliberately choosing a female as a partner, or another MTF(By the way, I had a T-friend that was very obviously bisexual, but he(I say "He" as he was non-transitioned)- said that he refused to allow himself being attracted to males 'because of what they had done throughout History' ::) ).

It also seems to be a matter of age, as older MTF's seem to generally be more female-oriented than those that have transitioned when very young. Ofcourse there are also many female-oriented young transitioners, too, but there is definitely a noticeable difference.
I would suppose because older transitioners often have lives with marriages behind them- Either because they simply liked women as males and always have, while others did it in an effort to try to seem "normal" and "got used" to it, while the young transitioners just goes for the preferred Sex right from the start(If male-oriented), so to speak.

Speaking about young transitioners, I some time ago stumbled over a statement regarding the Sexual Orientation in individuals that transitioned in their teens, implying that this type of transitioner foremostly selfidentify fully as heterosexual(In their new Sex), which is interesting.
If that is indeed the case, it may have very much to do with the known neurobiological effects from hormones, as it is a fact that HRT literally re-wires the brain, something that must indeed have dramatic effects if the brain is exposed to such treatment during, or even before, Puberty, instead of after it.

Another strong reason may also be that young transitioners simply often tend to be "Boy crazy". ;D

Regarding FTM's, there are several gay transguys on this board.

I wonder what a Poll would tell?
