In light of the current debate about transgender rights, I'm wondering just how many transgender and genderqueer people — ie. those who do not plan to fully transition within the official gender binary system — there are in this country, and just how "out" they are about their ->-bleeped-<-.

I know several natal males who identify as female sometimes, but will not be officially transitioning for whatever reasons. They consider themselves to be transgender people. They present as males in their public lives and live en femme privately. It's their choice. They wouldn't dream of showing up at an airport dressed en femme. Again, their choice.

So, how many transgender or genderqueer people are seriously affected by the perceived airline regulations everybody is talking about? Are we talking tens of thousands, thousands, hundreds?

Some interesting points being made there.

I am transgender. I have not transisioned. I won't be doing so. I don't live privately or otherwise as female. I see no reason to do so. I am female and if my appearance doesn't please anyone or entice the response they hoped for then perhaps they should grow up.

I have no dispute, nor criticism for those that feel they do need to, but for me, it would simply be aping what I can't achieve.

My problem isn't in me, it's in society. I have a right to be here. It's pleasing that society is coming to accept people who are different. Time was, being a poof, especially one of those 'who wants to be a woman' sort, could have and did,  resulted in a beating.

But no, I will express what I choose to, as I decide and if I do.

In 2008, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, there were approximately 810,000,000 passengers in the United States.

According to a recent study published by UCLA, approximately 0.3% of the population is transgendered.

Applying the two figures (810,000,000 x 0.003) suggests that 2,430,000 passengers were transgendered.

I could not find similar statistics for numbers of passengers who flew to, from, or within Canada.

I seem to be passing 100% at the moment, so the real issue for me appears to be my being out as a lesbian.  The woman in the newsagents who sold me a copy of Diva magazine didn't seem to notice anything beyond a woman buying a lesbian magazine.
