PARENTS could let their children change sex without court permission if a landmark legal bid is upheld.

The family of the youngest Australian to receive sex-change therapy is fighting for the decision to be one made between parents and doctors, not the court.

"Jamie", 11, has lived as a girl for years, dressing in female clothing and using the girls' toilets at school.

Should parents have the power to let their children change sex? Tell us below

Child sex-change ruling fails to solve the confusion

JAMIE will be 12 in May. She lives with her parents and twin brother somewhere in Australia and is, according to a Family Court judge's description, ''a very attractive young girl with long blonde hair''.

Her penis and testicles, which had begun to enlarge, are now suspended in an early adolescent state, courtesy of puberty-blocking drugs approved by the court last year.

Her breasts, for now, remain a matter for a future court ruling. Justice Linda Dessau reserved a decision over whether and when Jamie should be allowed to start the female hormones needed to make them grow, to take account of ''circumstances that may not be predicted when the child is ... still only 10''.

QuoteA ''horror of homosexuality'' underlies some gender dysphoria or transsexualism in adults, Jeffreys believes. By this rationale, for example, a man who cannot accept his attraction to other men may wish to become a woman in order to legitimise his desires.
Widening to children the notion that gender dissatisfaction is a psychiatric disorder, Jeffreys argues, lets adult transsexuals claim it is innate and immutable - bolstering claims for legal recognition and subsidised treatment.
''There's a whole industry in transgendering,'' says Jeffreys, including work for endocrinologists, whose bread-and-butter hormone replacement treatment of menopausal women has been dented by health scares
.

I had to read this bit several times.

A horror of homosexuality? Not a horror of transgender underlying homosexuality then? ( No, it's neither!)

A plot by adult transsexuals against children? Hmmm.

And, an attempt by the industry to widen its sales by including children in what was previously a women's only area?

Lot of plots then.

Seriously, the process seems rather convoluted at the moment, but at least it seems to be progressing.
