CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia lawmaker introduced a bill Thursday that would give gay and lesbian couples the same legal protections as heterosexual married couples.

Delegate John Doyle, D-Jefferson, said he wants to start a conversation about family equality. Gay and lesbian couples should have the same safety net to deal with the death of a parent or the loss of a job as married couples.

The bill faces an uphill battle in a state that passed a defense of marriage law in 2000.
