a famous case, often quoted - by the time the kid understood what had happened, was too messed up mentally to ever cope and eventually committed suicide  (IIRC)

It was the infamous "John/Joan" case.  The boy in question, later known as David Reimer, retransitioned to male and lived a troubled life.  He committed suicide after separating from his wife.
