Davy Jones, lead singer of 1960s made-for-TV band The Monkees whose hits included "I'm a Believer" and "Last Train to Clarksville," died on Wednesday, the local coroner said. He was 66.

The British-born singer, whose TV antics with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork drew fans but also unflattering comparisons with the Beatles, died of a heart attack in Florida, the TMZ celebrity website said.

"The ... medical examiners office has been notified of the death of Mr. Davy Jones," said the local authority in Martin County, southern Florida, where Jones reportedly lived.

The singer died at Martin Hospital South in Stuart, Florida, a spokesman for the hospital, Scott Samples, told AFP, giving no further details.

When the Monkees were at their peak, I was a pre-teen.  I was never really into their brand of pop music, although I later developed an appreciation for Mike Nesmith's solo work.

Just the same, when I heard the news, the song "Daydream Believer" popped into my head.  (That was Davy's signature song, as I remember.)    All of a sudden I was very sad and I recalled my youth.  All those regrets of things not accomplished and opportunities missed just seemed to well up inside me.

I guess I am a daydream believer.

I'm waiting for the media to tell me how important he was so I'll know if I have to mourn at a MJ level, or a Whitney level, or a Liz level.  Less than Jerry Garcia?  More than who ever is going to die next?
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

I personally thought the Whitney-ometer was too high. I thought she was a person who made a few songs that hurt my ears.

But with Davy Jones, well, the Monkees were the best and most significant band of the sixties, so crank that metre up.

Important?  Certainly not trend setters in the music industry, like some of those you named.

More like a marker on the path from then to now.

Wow, sad to hear. Davy Jones and the Monkees did leave their thumb print in the music industry.  A sad day indeed.

I remember when The Monkees first came on.  The network didn't think that the show would fly.  The show became very popular, that the actors had to really learn how to play their instruments.  I was in Jr. High at the time.  RIP Davy Jones.  Hey, Hey, We're the Monkees......

I spent my childhood deeply in love with Peter Tork (that smile...) and didn't really like Davy, but The Monkees when I was a kid represented friends when I didn't really have any. So this makes me sad the way hearing that a childhood friend had died would. Caught me by surprise.

Davy was a damn good dancer, even when he's doing it ironically, as here in their "ironic" film, Head:

I remember when he made an appearance on the Brady Bunch Movie, that was great? Life is short and we all die and god damm I couldn't stand the Monkey's! From what I'm to understand Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkeys once, bet that was one hell of show with a bunch of ten year olds chewen on bubble gum on one side and a bunch of teenagers trippin out on purple haze on the other side.
