Sam Houston State University, a member of the Texas State University System, has added sexual orientation and gender identity to its Equal Employment Opportunity policy.

The school, situated in Huntsville, is the first public college outside of a major urban area in Texas to add the protections. The revised policy applies to employment, admission, and campus life and activities.

Sam Houston State University recently made a giant step toward the "state of equality" by revising its Equal Employment Opportunity policy and nondiscrimination statement to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Led by Vice President for Student Services Frank Parker, the President's Cabinet voted to add the two as protected classes into three areas of SHSU policy, including Chapter V for "Component Personnel," which outlines employment qualifications; Chapter VI for "Student Services Activities," which outlines admissions criteria; and Chapter VII's non-discrimination policy involving campus life and activities.

For those not familiar with Texas, SHSU is located in Huntsville, which is 80 miles north of Houston along Interstate 45. It is also the home of the Texas Prison System or Texas Department of Criminal Justice (formerly the Texas Dept. of Corrections). Also located inside the city of Huntsville is Huntsville Unit, also known as "The Walls", housing the state's  Execution Chamber.

Although the Dallas Voice article makes mention of the school's Drama and Theater program, SHSU is also known for its Criminal Justice Program, http://www.cjcenter.org/  . Makes for an interesting combination!
