During the city council meeting on Monday, Mayor Jeff Mulligan brought forward a proclamation without precedence in Lloydminster.
The week of March 25 to 31 will be Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Visibility will be March 31.
Mulligan signed the proclamation after discussing it with council.
"There was no precedent and I didn't think it was my position to bring new proclamations just under the power of the mayor's office," said Mulligan following the meeting.

"I'm just one vote of seven. I wanted to be absolutely clear that my council colleagues were aware of a proclamation that didn't have precedence here in the city of Lloyd."
However, not all of council was in agreement that the proclamation should be made.
Councillor Allan Park opposed the proclamation on the grounds that he is not aware of any transgendered people in Lloydminster.
