Are the words "homophobia" and "transphobia" synonymous? Well, no, but often when people talk about homophobia, they're talking about transphobia as well.

Case in point: the recent warning by the Canadian government for "gay travellers" to St. Petersburg, Russia, which has enacted legislation targetting LGBT people.

Clearly, the warning is for all LGBT people, not just gay males. Once again, distinctions are not being made for sexual orientation and gender identity in the terminology being used.

This is very common — it happens all the time. Few people are aware of the term "transphobia."
