Just wonder how the airlines look at booking a ticket. You have to show proof of identy at the airport. Wonder how close they look. Would they want to strip search you to make sure??

I have never had any issues even though my DL has my court ordered name change and a very feminine picture my sex indicator still says M, my birth state will change it when I give the letter. I have never flown out of the country nor do I have a passport.

they do not look too closely.  I have flown all over the states and with a few carriers.  Due to a legal SNAFU where I live I have the old name on my DL and also the M for the gender marker.  So I TRY to look like him when I fly but what happens is that they look at the ticket (which has his name on it so it matches the state ID) and, on their own, feminize the first name or just call me Miss.

YMMV.

I was just wondering. Shortly after I had my name legaly changed I had to go to the drivers lisense place to get a new picture on it. It has me as I am now. The license had to be renewed a year later and I  played little miss priss and leaned over the counter showing some clevage and told the guy they made a mistake on the M/F last year. He was really nice and said he would input it in the computer, and I should have my lisense in a couple of weeks. Low and behold it came back with an F. I don't know if they will catch it or not.

Hmm, I went through the normal process of getting my gender marker changed and got an F on it right away.  It turns out that shortly after (maybe even a day or 2 later) I got my license changed, they had a policy change where a surgery letter is now required.  I had to get a new license because I moved and it still had the correct gender marker.

It's not possible to pull something like that off in the state I live in because all gender marker changes can only be done through the central office, which is not a DMV place itself.  You would turn in some documents and they would make the change at the office after reviewing the paperwork.

Yeah I had the same thing flying back from chest surgery. I hadn't changed my name or anything on my ID because I was concerned about the US being difficult about letting me in if my ID said female and my name and appearance said male. So I dressed in drag to get into the states and coming back to Canada, just dressed as me. Same ID, all saying female, and the customs officer said thank you sir, and on I went.

I actually had more of a grilling going into the states, because I looked like a guy in drag, my ID said female, and I was not carrying off the drag very successfully at all (hating what you're wearing doesn't do much for your credibility. Plus I'd just shaved and my skin was still very sensitive, so I had this red beard rash that didn't help much either.)

Airport people generally don't care, I flew home for christmas with my old name/gender marker passport (domestic flight though), not one airport person kicked up a fuss.

What was useful at christmas was that I could just borrow my sisters ID whenever I needed one which wouldn't have any questions asked about, we looked very allike before hand and even more so now, I don't need to anymore (nothing age wise she can do that I can't) as I've got all my IDs changed (passport's in the mail) bar my birth cert (26th oct 2008 is when I'm eligible to change that).

Where I live you don't go to the DMV to get your license renewed. You have to go the Government Center Bldg. This is where I brought my court paperwork. You have to get a new picture no mater what. They take your license and give you a piece of paper. The lady I dealt with the first time was not too friendly. In about 3 weeks or so I received my new license in the mail and I noticed that it still had the M marker so I called and I was told that it would have to remain that. A year later my license had to be renewed. I know I just had it done, but at that time it still had a year to go before it expired. Just another way to get more money out of you. This time I dealt with a guy. He said he would input the change/mistake and we would have to see how it came back. It did come back with the F marker. So maybe it was a mistake the first time, or I actually had to wait for the actual renewal date. I don't know. It is hard to make any sense out of the government. All I know is that I am very happy now to have the change on my license.

That's really cool, Deb.  I would think that if you have the F on your license you should be able to fly anywhere, at least stateside, without any worries.  And judging by your pic, you should have no problems at all convincing anyone that you are who your DL says you are.  You remind me of the old words by the Beach Boys:  "The midwest farmer's daughter's really make you feel alright."

Very close, especially after 9/11.  If you're wearing sunglasses, they will tell you to remove them.  If your hair is a different color from what it is on your ID, they will take a second look at you.  They are even stricter on international flights, so yeah...

P.S.  Deb, personally I don't think you should worry about it assuming that you have "everything" in order. (documentation I mean.)

I am a TSA Girl, And I can tell you up front, We are very ok to fly. There is usaully not a prob when flying. Be cool with them and they will be cool with you. You really dont even need a boarding pass to fly. Long as you are screened, You may proceed to the gates. (But ya will need a boarding pass to board the plane though)

That's funny Icarus because even before transition and HRT,
I often had to prove I was the same person as on my passport
when all I had changed was my haircut and had my glasses on!!!

Sometimes I felt like superman, put the glasses on and I'd be
a wholly different unrecognizeable person.

I especially had problems getting into Ukraine.
It took the border ghard in the train 30 minutes, and a
supervisor!!! to confirm I was me. Plain incredible.

Land crossings as a TS would stress me out much more than
going by airplane. Usually, they are much less professional,
especially in third world countries. Crossing into China in Tibet,
another fun one!! I don't even want to try such things pre-op.
