Even as a Grade 8 student at Vancouver's Killarney secondary, Jenna Talackova's femininity was apparent.

She still classified as a boy back then - going by her birth name Walter - but the teenager's mannerisms and appearance were that of a young woman. She had a slender frame and straight, shoulder length blond hair; she hung around mostly with female friends. She used the moniker Page for a while.

"It was very obvious," said Teruko Walker, recalling the looks and behaviour of Talackova, now a Miss Universe Canada contestant, in her early teens.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
