I try not to take it without food because of how gross it is - I tend to gag just taking it at times. I don't imagine that taking it without food would make it less effective... either way, though, sometimes I take with food, sometimes not, and my tests always come back the same way - Testosterone is suppressed.

So, probably no difference, aside from losing meals.

My prescription label says to "TAKE WITH FOOD", so I try to take spiro with food every time.

I take mine with or without food.  Just depends on when I get home.  I have not had any side effects from either .

I always take mine with breakfast, which I eat as soon as I get up. I like to get everything out of the way at once. :)

I take half my dose in the morning and take the other half in the evening. :)
so it'd be a pain to have to make sure you eat at night just to take your last dose.

but now that i know its pretty common to not follow directions that are on the bottle, i feel better now.

So I read this thread when it first came up because I was naturally curious since I'm totally guilty of taking my spiro on an empty stomach when I'm in a hurry. Anyway I did a little research, learned a lot, and then of course lost the link. Well I found it again today while browsing around and wanted to share it, just in case others are interested, although it does mention a dosage so I'm not sure if it's ok to post or not. If its not I'm sorry :(

Anyway, the important part from what I found was:
"These observations indicate that food promotes the absorption of spironolactone and possibly decreases its first-pass metabolism."

ummm what does this mean? Is it better with food or without? Sorry, I am dumber then you think -blushing with embarrassment-

in addition to the "avoid side effects," like nausea and upset stomach as posted by others, there are two other case when it is better to take a drug in an empty stomach, and they are: a) a few drugs that are absorb by the stomach mucosa directly, and thus better absorb in an empty stomach, and b) other drugs can be inactivated by too much stomach acid -whose production is stimulated by ingesting food- and so it has to be taken in an empty stomach (this are older drug formulation that have been replaced by modern pharmacological formulations. Spiro does not fit either category, so it can be taken in an empty stomach.

Spiro is not legally licensed in my country (the U.K) but I managed to get hold of some and not tried it yet! is it better or worse than the other anti andogens?

Sometimes I take it right after I eat something, sometimes I don't. It all depends on how food (and remembering to take it) fits into my schedule.

I've never noticed a difference either way and my levels are all where they should be.
