LONG BEACH - Sister Spit is a gathering of avant-garde lesbian and transgender writers, poets and performance artists - the nerds and outcasts of the gay community, says Sister Spit co-founder Michelle Tea.

"We are misfits and outsiders in the queer community," she said.

Members of the literary art group will read selections from their works in a free event 7 p.m. Friday at the Art Theatre of Long Beach, 2025 E. Fourth St.
