Anchorage isn't the only place where LGBT rights are going to ballot in the near future. North Carolina votes May 8 on Amendment One, which constitutionally bans both same-sex marriage and civil unions.

I'm a believer in the 10% rule.  Ten percent of the population thinks that Elvis is still alive.  Ten percent of the population thinks the moon landings were a sham.

You will never reach those 10%, but you can educate the other 90%.

My daughter thinks Elvis is Elvis Costello. No matter how many times I correct her, she just thinks half the world really really loved Elvis Costello.

I go with something much closer to 20% of people who are crazy, not rational, and/or not functioning at an appropriate level due to having some sort of developmental disability - never mind that often such disabilities are often self-inflicted.

Still the language is pretty clear as such things go.  It's a simple Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage is between one man and one woman and that such unions are the only legal unions recognized by the state.  Here is the language:

Sec. 6. Marriage.
Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.  [emphasis added]

Since North Carolina already prohibits such unions this seems like an attempt to gin up conservative voters and get them to the polls when they don't' feel much like voting for the candidates they are presently being offered.

I live in North Carolina, will be voting against this amendment in May and have contributed to the effort to fight it.  It is completely unneeded political grandstanding because any marriage outside one man and one woman is already illegal.  Our only hope is that if the amendment passes it will be struck down later and it is highly detrimental to all sort of unmarried couple regardless of gender or orientation.  The general tide seems to be running against such restrictive laws but the cave dwelling conservatives are trying to make one last bold stand.  Let's hope they can be defeated May 8th and if you live in NC please turn out vote against this Amendment One.

Proposition 5, sexual orientation and transgender addition to existing discrimination law, here in Alaska recently failed to pass. There is some controversy over the results since some polling locations ran out of ballots and a large number of people couldn't vote (that went out to vote). It's very sad really.
