Sadly, I think electrolysis and laser (and to some extent IPL, but that's really contested) are the only durable hair removal techniques... If you don't have much, maybe you could get away with plucking or something like this, but otherwise, I think you're stuck with electrolysis.
But you don't really have to go for Electrology 3000, either. You can just pick up whatever money you can and go for electrolysis for as many hours a week as you can afford. It's longer, but also more gradual, as in, you don't have to keep your full beard until you have the fortune that E3000 requires. And it doesn't have to take years, really. I guess it all comes down to how much time and money you can afford each week.
I'm not sure, however, which costs the most in total.
