It's now taken him on a speaking tour, with his first stop at one of his alma maters.
Wayne Maines, a Fulton-Montgomery Community College graduate, returned to his former school Tuesday to explain how his beliefs - those of a "Ronald Reagan conservative" - were tested when one of his identical twin sons began presenting as a transgender girl.
"I'm still a pretty conservative guy. I struggle internally with politics in the world because I don't know who to vote for," Maines said. "I'm now a semi-conservative independent with a transgender child. How do you figure that one out?"
