My natural voice...

I am constantly being gendered as female over the phone or on Ventrillo every time. But I have not changed my voice. Do I really sound that feminine?

I know I sound considerably different on the phone from how I sound if I recorded myself on the computer.
Many of the overtones seem to get lost in the phone line, which I remember made my voice sound markedly feminine even before it really was.
You could try calling yourself, play your recorded voice into it, and see if you hear the difference

Well my wife said that my voice is kind of soft and Tigger has heard my voice in conversation. But both do agree that I sound feminine. I mean, if that's the case, could it be another contributing factor of me being seen as gay by my peers as I was growing up?

I can see hear why.  I would also call you Ma'am.  You do have a bit of a low tone, but so does my neighbor and she has sound like that all her life.  And yes she does get called "sir" all the time.   You should be fine.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother changing your voice. You sound way more feminine than I ever have. Yeah, I do get sirred on the phone a lot, but nobody's ever given me a hard time after being corrected. I've also started noticing that most of the women in my family have really deep voices. I don't think it's a big deal unless someone just doesn't pass at all.

BTW - Your new hairstyle looks good. Other than the slight beard shadow (which I know you can't really cover up right now), I'm having a hard time imagining the person in your avatar photo as a male. And even the face fuzz might not be a deal-breaker. I had a pretty noticeable old lady mustache for a couple years until I gave in and started shaving last year.

Yeah, It's a bit lower tone, but it has that edge? (Made that up, lol) The way words end and stuff, projects a more feminine thing. But ultimately voices range all over the place with people, so yours is just one that is naturally closer.

And I mean, If people are gendering your voice then that is more than enough proof that it's female enough right?

Yes. My voice kinda didn't drop much. That played a pretty big part in being seen as a gay guy I think. There were other things, but voice is kinda the single biggest genderable thing.

You don't have to. It really depends on what you want. I did a little. I learned to talk a bit more forcefully, and I can scream and yell and whatnot now without hurting my voice, which is cool. I also decided to raise my pitch about ~25 Hz because I'm just more comfortable with it that way.

I guess it puts me in the same groups of women as Demi Moore, Kathleen Turner, Kate Mulgrew, Scarlett Johansson, and Julia Roberts. They have deep feminine voices.
