This is all true. My ex and I were involved for 2 years when she fell in love with a woman and left me for her. She didn't want anyone to know she was in a lesbian relationship but I was upset and had no one to talk to but this friend. Now my ex found out I told our mutual friend about her new relationship and is threatening to sue me. She posted this on my facebook wall

"united states privacy law embodies several different legal concepts. One is the invasion of privacy, a tort based in common law allowing an aggrieved party to bring a lawsuit against an individual who unlawfully intrudes into his or her private affairs, discloses his or her private information, publices him or her in a false light, or appropriates his or her name for personal gain"

Now I'm kinda scared....anyone have any advice?

Can I really get in trouble for telling the TRUTH to a mutual friend?

She said that now she feels like she can't talk to that friend and that the friend I told was "the only real friend she has"

Disclaimer: I am not an attorney!

In the United States a person can be sued for almost anything in civil court.  There was a case in which a kidnapper sued the victims because they did not him him evade the police.

You were not acting as a government authority.  You were acting as a civilian who confided in another civilian as emotional support.  That civilian just happen to tell your ex.  This happens a lot.

If you are hit with a civil law you are pretty much obligated to follow through or your ex would win.  This can get pretty costly but you can counter it with another civil lawsuit for expenses you had to pay.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.  The chances are low that she would win.  Now if you were acting as an authority of the law that would be another story.

It's only slander if what you tell someone is a lie.  I'd reply back on FB that she needs the get her head out of her girfriends vagina and do a little reading on Tort Law. Unjustly threatening to sue you IS actually a tort but telling the truth is FREE SPEECH!
