Well discrimination will be a problem even if there are laws to protect you, they can be circumvented by interviewing, and the selection panel just saying there are more suitable applicants.
But, decide what sort of job you want. What are you qualified for? Is the new job gender neutral? Will it be something you are happy to do?
Can you show a good employment history? Do you have a CV (if required) and referees?
I know the job market in the USA is terrible but it has to get better sometime soon.
