"It was a situation where it was good that we'd had some training as to how to remain in silent vigil against the vile, terrible things they were shouting at us," said Dean Genth of Mason City.

Genth, program coordinator of PFLAG-North Iowa, is serving as director of logistics for the eastern route of the 2007 Soulforce Equality Ride.

Two groups of more than 50 young adults are visiting 32 Christian colleges with what Soulforce characterizes as climates or policies that silence lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

"They were yelling and screaming and flailing their Bibles in the air. They were telling us that we were going to go to hell and we need to turn away from our wicked ways."
