Resetting of smites?

I noticed that the smites have recently been reset.  Was this an error or was it intentional?

I actually use both applauds and smites and try to do both fairly.  I remember the smites being reset before.  If this happens regularly, why have smites at all?  Why not just have a "like" button?  Seems kind of pointless to me.

Not meaning to be rude or go against authority here.  I'm just curious why this keeps happening, and if it's a regular thing, wouldn't it just be easier to do away with the current system?
