Civil union foes say issue is moot in Va.

N.H. is considering same-sex unions, but Va. law forbids them

Several state legislatures around the country are considering proposals about whether to allow same-sex civil unions, but opponents in Virginia say the issue is dead here.

On Wednesday, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted by a nearly 2-1 ratio to allow civil unions for same-sex couples. The proposal now heads to the state Senate for consideration.

In November, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. The amendment, which became part of the Bill of Rights of the Virginia Constitution, outlaws same-sex marriage and civil unions, as well as domestic partnerships and any relationship between unmarried couples that approximates marriage.
