On March 21, an Illinois House committee passed a bill  that would extend legal recognition and many of the benefits of civil marriage to same sex couples. The Religious Freedom and Civil Union Act (HB1826) passed the Illinois House Human Services Committee with a vote of 5-4, and was sent to the full House for consideration.

A March 27th Chicago Sun-Times editorial stated "Not only is there no reason Illinois shouldn't be added to those states that have enacted similar laws, there's also every reason it should."
