New guy says Hi

A good friend of mine recommended this site as a friendly, helpful place where I could ask questions, access information, and just generally hang out with other trans people.  So, here I am.  I'm really happy to be here.

I'm from New Zealand.  I'm an analyst and, in my spare time, a sculptor.  I was assigned female at birth, and have reached a point in my life where I can't ignore the fact that I'm male anymore.

I really don't know how I define myself yet.  I have obvious somatic mosaicism, and because of that I suspect I may be intersex.  I'm pretty clear that my gender is male, but I'm not pursuing transition for a number of reasons and actually don't object to living as a woman.  It's physically being a woman that gives me dysphoria.  My body's just not what my brain expects it to be.

Yet another big Aussie welcome to Susan's family. I'm so pleased you're dropped in to have a look around and possible call it home. You have a remarkable friend obviously, who is doing the right thing by you. Friends like that are priceless.

Hey, and just because you are on the other side of theTasman, (the Creek) we won't hold that against you.    The land of the long white cloud is a mighty land. It's so special you see the sun 4 hours before we do. In fact by the time it reaches us in Sydney, it's already second hand. Treat it well for us please

How proactive is your community there? Is it supportive and progressive? In my overall research for GCS surgeons, I actually rang the centre at I think it was Auckland hospital. From the information I gathered, I felt there may have been a lack of community support. It was very pricey too, over 35,000NZD.

Susan's is a good place for resources, information and friendships, and they abound here for YOU. Hope you enjoy your stay, and it's long. I look forward to hearing more from you in time to come, so in the meantime, be safe, well and happy

To answer your questions, I'm not aware that we have a commuinity as such.  I haven't encountered anything like that - not that that means it's not there, of course.  I'm in Wellington, which is a pretty progressive kind of place generally, but there's no visible TS community AFAIK.  Your estimate for surgery seems fairly accurate from my own investigations.  I have looked into it, but can't afford it.

I think the Seahorse Society have an outreach in NZ, although they are traditionally a CD network, they may know of local TG groups that would be essential for your development and social outlets. Have you tried the resources page here? I know there is a mountain of information and resources here, surely there must be something available for you. This is not the sort of journey you want to take a 'Robinson Crusoe' outlook on.

I did that, just to cover all bases. Obviously cheaper in the States, but I'm not sure how your dollar converts to USD. Just a 'tad' cheaper in Thailand, but then again I don't know how your dollar shapes up there either.

Let us know your thoughts and feelings. Can't be a good place for you to be in psychologically.

Yeah, contacting the public health service is probably a good idea, and what with one thing and another I haven't yet got around to really looking into the resource pages here.  I need to do that.

Overall, I'd think Thailand would work out cheaper when you factor in the exchange rate and travel/accommodation costs.  I must admit I don't quite see why top surgery has to be so expensive.  Surely it's just a matter of removing some tissue and rearranging the nipples a bit?  But then, I'm no surgeon.  It's probably a lot more complex than that.
