Any advice on what would be the best way to get the ball rolling on therapy. I've never been to a therapist or any kind of mental health professional so I'm not sure what exactly to do. Would I just ask for a referral from my family doctor? I just want someone to help me sort out some of my issues related to gender for now and to help me decide if transitioning is right for me or if there is something else I should try first. Any advice is appreciated.

First, check your doctor if he or she knows of a referral.  Sometimes your local LGBT chapter can offer you a list of therapists, some listed online or calling the chapter.  Several sessions with a therapist in gender identity issues can recommend the proper therapy to you doctor whether it be hormones or other meds if need be.
