Oregon House panel hears two rights bills

Oregonians packed a state Capitol chamber Monday night as a House committee considered two rights bills -- one to create same-sex civil unions and one to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Testimony was taken from both the LGBT community and religious conservatives as the House Committee on Elections, Ethics and Rules heard a civil unions bill that would extend same-sex couples most of the state's marriage benefits.



Anti-Discrimination Bills Spark Emotion

But some religious leaders want expanded exemptions for their organizations. Right now, SB 2 only exempts employees who deal directly with the ministry, not workers such as janitors or chefs.
