The use of "transvestite" and male pronouns to describe transgender sex workers in an Auckland Council report into street prostitution in South Auckland is being described as inappropriate.

The document is aimed at putting pressure on the Government to allow Auckland Council to outlaw sex workers from certain areas, and includes personal accounts from business owners and residents.

LEXIE MATHESON: "The brochure is made largely by middle-class, white, privileged heterosexual men."

A transgender academic has complained to the Human Rights Commission over an Auckland Council-produced book she claims inaccurately portrays sex workers.
Auckland University of Technology lecturer lexie Matheson has complained to the council and the commission about the book, released last month, which was intended to show the need for new prostitution laws.
The book focuses on South Auckland communities and in particular, Hunter's Corner in Papatoetoe and has personal accounts from business owners and residents.

Cathy Casey

An Auckland councillor has joined a number of members and allies of the trans community in complaining to the Human Rights Commission about a "discriminatory" booklet on prostitution in South Auckland.

Councillor Cathy Casey says the Council produced booklet is discriminatory to transgender people, reflecting the individual complaints, and contrary to the Auckland Plan vision.

Body "unable" to take further action over booklet

Posted in: New Zealand Daily News | By GayNZ.com Daily News staff - 27th August 2012

The Human Rights Commission says it's unable to take further action over an Auckland Council booklet which uses the term "transvestite" to describe transgender sex workers.

After receiving complaints about the document, Auckland Council put out a statement saying it did not mean to cause offence and the booklet would not be reprinted in that form.

The Human Rights Commission has received three complaints the booklet is discriminatory towards the transgender community, including one complaint from Auckland City Councillor Cathy Casey and another from AUT lecturer Lexie Matheson.
