Watch Lana Wachowski and the directors of "Cloud Atlas" discuss the film, due out on Oct. 26, above.

The director of "The Matrix" and the highly-anticipated film "Cloud Atlas" has become the first major Hollywood director to publicly come out as transgender.

This new clip for "Cloud Atlas," starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, appears to her first public appearance since transitioning.

In the trailer, Lana introduces the film with her brother, Andy Wachowski, and director Tom Tykwer.

"Hi, I'm Lana," she says with her hair styled in pink dreadlocks.

He Morpheus-ed from man to woman.

"The Matrix" director formerly known as Larry Wachowski is now going by Lana after undergoing a sex-change operation, the first time a top film director has publicly switched genders.

"Hi, I'm Lana," announced Wachowski, 47, in a movie promo in LA last week sporting a gray dress and fuchsia dreadlocks and speaking in a breathy German accent.

It's unclear if the director's sex change is complete, but Wachowski says she has been "transitioning" from male to female for years.

She embraced the new identity in a trailer for her new film, "Cloud Atlas," and is credited under the name Lana Wachowski.

The movie, based on a sci-fi novel by British author David Mitchell, stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, who swap names and genders in the production.

Yeah, she started transition several years ago, waaaay before she started to work on this. She looks like someone out of 'Matrix', really. :D

I heard about the transition in 2007, but I guess I shrugged it off and thought that it was a joke on everyone.  Turns out I was wrong.  I hope she does even more good business after this movie.  Wasn't a big fan of Speed Racer, but the first Matrix movie and Bound were really great films.

I see that her info has been updated as such in the Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB.com) except that it shows her birth name as Laurence, and the only photo posted looks fully male-mode.  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0905154/

This brings up interesting questions for me personally in the future because I have credits listed in the IMDB.  Would they change or remove my birth name if requested?  Would I just leave that connection behind me since I'm not working in that business any longer and probably won't again?

Thanks to Madeline for posting this - you've given my something new to think about which is rather important.

I think that would be the case.  Just ask them and I'm sure they will update your listing.

You're welcome. Every organization will have its own name change or correction process. If you are member of ASCAP, BMI, the screenwriter's guild, etc, you will want to find out how to update your name with each.

Here's what I could find for IMDB:
https://resume.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?namewrong

QuoteFirst, it's important to note that we want to record the way the credits appeared on screen. If your name is spelled wrong on the screen, we still want to record that fact.
Let's say, though, that all the credits listed for you in the database are wrong. Easy enough: Look up the misspelled name, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the Edit Page button, and choose Name Correction / Add Correction. Click on Continue, and fill in the forms that follow. There's a very important check box on this page marked "update existing credits with 'as' attribute"-- if the listing we have matches what appears on screen, you should check this box.
