i have been growing out my hair for a couple of years now 3 to be exact, i had a pixie cut a few years ago and decided to start growing it out long. My hair as of now is almost to the middle of my back, it was longer but i encountered a scissor happy hair stylist 2 days ago. I take very good care of my hair, i deep condition, take vitamins, avoid heat as often as possible and i also trim my own ends. I actually trimmed them a few days before i went to the salon- and my hair is actually in pretty good condition its not frizzy or anything. Mt intention at the hair salon was simply to get some highlights in my hair, after my highlights were finished the young woman who dyed my hair decided to snip off about 3 inches from my hair to my horror- i got up and said "what are you doing?" she said she thought a cut would look "nice" with my new color i then proceeded to tell her "if i wanted a cut, i would tell you" not only that but she said i had about 2 inches of split ends which was a down right lie because i know how to trim those off and i did. Anyway i walked out without paying after a argument, i had to chop off 3 inches of my hair because the chunk she snipped off was very noticeable. I was definitely fuming and i have decided that i will not be visiting hair salons anymore- i know not all hair dressers are this way but i simply do not trust people with my hair anymore. Im pretty sure i am smart enough to tell if my hair is healthy or not and it definitely is. Sorry everyone, i just needed to vent  >:(

Yep, had that happen. I was livid, years back in highschool I asked for a specific cut and ended up looking like willy wonka from the new movie. Granted it was very girly but I wasn't out yet :P

You just gotta find one you trust hun. Only thing you can do. Strangely enough, I go to the one in a Walmart.

That's flat out messed up. If you did not ask for the service, she should NOT be doing it. That's about the same as someone coming up and washing your car windows when  you're stuck in traffic and asking you to give them money. NO stylist should touch anybodies hair with sheers without asking them first. That's completely unethical.

That said, lots of hairdressers will cut off more than you ask them to cut off because they think of the profession as an artistry. It's bad practice but it's very common for them to just assume that you'll like whatever they give you. Or, in the communications process of the consultation, maybe the client will say an inch and not realize just how much an inch is. Not saying that you (or anybody here) did this, but it does happen. I always make sure to show someone exactly how much I'm going to be cutting off if I'm about to put sheers to someones hair. Cutting off more hair than someone wants a stylist to do is right up there with damaging the hair in no nos.

Sorry to hear that Elsa.

My wife had very long hair and so many times hairdressers would try and cut 'just an inch' off just to tidy it up. Finally she would only go to hairdressers who had long hair themselves and they were always very sympathetic to not cutting anything off.

I'm glad you at least didn't pay.

Hugs still trying to grow mine. :embarrassed:

It is very frustrating when that happens. I'm trying to grow my hair out, and twice in the last 7 months I've gone to a hairdresser and asked for just a tidy up around the fringe, ears, and back of the neck. Both times they've taken off much more than I wanted, including off the top where I specifically told them not to. It's a struggle to find a good hairdresser, and the excuse they give is always that they need to trim split ends, or the layering was all messed up, or whatever. Like you Elsa I'm sick of hairdressers assuming they know what we want more than we ourselves know.

I sympathise. I haven't been to a hairdresser for 12 years. But I trim the ends and do my own highlights. I don't know what they charge today, but it was extortionate back then for minimal effort.

I haven't been to hairdresser since 2006 for the same reason. I don't trust most of them! I've had a couple of bad experiences in the past and you have to make sure you are in complete control at all times. Also don't be drawn in by fancy looking salons as it often has no bearing on their standard of work.

It's been a few years since I've gone to a hair place  :-\   The last time I went ended with me going home and shaving my head with my dogs clippers  :P

My hair has been growing out for a few years now and I do clip the ends, but I have been thinking to go in and have it clipped evenly across my back

If they screw up something that simple I think I'll just give up on hair salons

Back before I realized that I am trans I was out of town on a business trip and decided to get my hair cut at one of those "super" places. I had a traditional male style haircut and told the girl that i wanted it kept the same just trimmed back a little. She proceeded to shear me. Its really hard when you work in a professional environment and show up for work one day with short spiky hair - i didn't even have enough to brush and wound up just running some hair gel through with my fingers to "style" it. Needless to say I was mortified.

I learned my lesson about not getting it cut by someone that i trust.

I tried to get layers one day and the hair stylist messed up my hair so I know how you feel. When you don't like the service, you don't pay and you didn't so good for you. Don't worry, your hair will grow back.

Happened to me too. told here "I want to grow it out long" and she took half of it off.
I told her i was TG and she was a little shocked. Maybe she sublimely mailized me. LGBT is still rough here in the bible belt.

Well, I hope you don't start avoiding hairdressers altogether. Just as in every other occupation there are hair stylists that are good at their jobs and those who are not. No stylist should ever cut a client's hair without discussing it with the client first. There are plenty of good stylists out there who know that, however it may take a bit of effort to find one. Ask around.

Anyway, I suspect that stylist learned a valuable lesson from the experience.

I have run into a lot of stylists that I haven't liked. I have had a good cut or two, but overall... they either take off too much hair, or are just trying to copy-paste something they've done hundreds of times without thought to compatibility.

I still go to them every so often - that is, not very often at all - but hair cuts have mostly been an unnecessary expense for the last half-year or so.

I'm sorry about your experience. I can imagine how much worse it would be with hair that you treasure.

I wish yall could all just ... come to me ;)

These are terrifying stories to me. I love my hair (it's probably my best feature) and if anybody hacked off inches I would be SOOOO angry.

Thank God my mom AND my roommate are both stylists with a BUNCH of experience.

Sorry you got bad service Elsa. Just a quick note, threatening someone gets you arrested in all fifty states. I don't advise doing that. Hugs, Devlyn
