This week, on Aug. 21, 2012 FUNimation Entertainment releases "Shangri-La" parts one and two on DVD and we took the opportunity to check out this science fiction series based on the light novel by Eiichi Ikegami and Ken'ichi Yoshida.

The series follows a young girl named Kuniko Hojo, the granddaughter of the leader of a rebel group called Metal Age, as she tries to find her place in the world and deciding whether or not to eventually lead Metal Age. As she returns home to Duomo from her incarceration, Kuniko goes about her days trying to live a normal life alongside her transsexual companion, Momoko.

Visually "Shangri-La" has a good look to it; everything has nice detail and is colorful while the picture quality is clear. The characters all have great character designs that seem to fit with the setting nicely, although a few characters stand out drastically, like the sadist Ryoko, the teddy bear loving Karin, and Momoko, who you have to see to believe.

All-in-all "Shangri-La" is an entertaining series that blends the science fiction and supernatural genres to deliver an intense twist filled journey.
History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.
