Doctors and specialists will meet in Cairns this week to learn more about transgender health issues.

Beginning on Friday, the Transgender, Sister Girl and Gender Diverse Conference is the inaugural transgender health forum in Queensland, and one of the first of its type in Australia.

Conference organiser and sexual health expert Darren Russell says doctors often don't know how to treat transgender people with health issues.

"There are specialists in this area around the country - both GPs who have got large numbers of transgender people in their community as well as clinics, specialists and psychiatrists who are experts in this," Dr Russell told AAP.
