My Mom got a call last week from my grandmother, who said that she and my grandfather had watched a program on 20/20 about transgendered kids. She said my grandfather understood my situation a lot better now -- in fact, was completely sympathetic -- and they'd taped it for us.
I watched it -- it was called "My Secret Self" -- and now I think it should be in the required SOFFA curriculum, at least for parents. Even if you're an adult transsexual, it's good for significant others -- and the general public -- to see that ->-bleeped-<- starts in childhood and isn't just a phase or a fad. The program featured three kids: an MTF six-year-old, an MTF ten-year-old, and an FTM seventeen-year-old. Their parents had let them transition young. The ten-year-old and the six-year-old were both living full-time as girls, and were going to begin hormones in the future to halt puberty. Both were very pretty and girly, although the ten-year-old was teased at school because the other kids knew about it. The seventeen-year-old was on testosterone, and had a very deep voice. Barbara Walters interviewed thenm all, and was very compassionate and sensitive. If more people saw this show, I think they'd view us with more respect, sympathy, and credibility. Did anyone else watch it?
