It's already built-in - the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary has this to say (amongst a whole lot else) about "fellow":
A companion, an associate, a comrade. Now usu. in pl. ME. ▸ †b spec. A female companion. ME–E17.It's only more recently that "fellow" has the taint of manhood about it 🙂.
