In you video, I did not get a sense of dissonance from your appearance and voice.

This part, about the dissonace, is actually a relief.  It's why I used a video here, actually, to test that very thing.   I really hope I can figure out how to smooth out the (abounding) problems because I really would prefer this pitch over my more resting (180-190hz) voice that I use now.  The encouraging thing is that speaking up there doesn't wear my voice out for some reason, just the way I'm holding things in my throat or sormthing.  Def not ready for prime time yet tho lol.

Well I think your personality comes through a lot in your voice. I like the dgaf attitude you have with it and I lol'd at one of your previous recordings. Your forum handle does indeed suit you very well.

And I do think that I agree with you. Sometimes it does sound a bit feminine or a bit masculine, but I can see that you don't care enough for it to affect your passing, and as we all know confidence makes the biggest difference. As long as you're not using your truck mode I doubt you get read much at all due to not changing your voice.

The phone is my only real enemy... And I'm seeing a speech therapist to get some help with that - yeah, I know, the person who doesn't do voice work is doing voice work... They'll come and take my rebel card back..

You'll always be a rebel don't worry. You're just rebelling against your rebellious nature ;)

This really does feels like a breakthrough for me, but the mental block going on there is just... and idk how I will fare against it.  Somebody please tell my subconscious that I really do want to use that pitch when I talk?

I listened, and after it was finished, it segued into another, older, raspy sound bite.  I hear definite improvement.

Spent some time with the speech therapist today.. And learnt something interesting about my voice.. My issue appears to be I have too large a pitch range, the difference between my highs and lows is too great.. Apart from that, she commented that I have one of the better untrained voices she'd ever heard from a trans woman.. She has quite extensive experience in the area..

It sounds weird without bass, but with the speakers I sound pretty good actually.

Well it's definitely a short clip...  But you sound nothing short of wonderful :)

Way to go, your voice gets a pass pass pass with flying colors :D

Hi.
I started experimenting with my voice yesterday. I know that I doen't pass now but I don't know how to improve my voice. I have included two recordings of this text ( http://www.rit.edu/ntid/speechlang/slpros/media/rainbow ), first with my normal voice and second with trying to do high pitch. English is not my native language so I have weird accent and maybe also little different intonation than in my native language. What you think about the voice? Any advices appreciated :).

Sarah- your normal pitch recording is right on the money. I would also say that you sound VERY female. Great work for just starting out :)

The higher pitch one sounds a bit like falsetto, so I would just keep it relaxed at your normal one!

Thank you, like to hear that I don't need to do falsetto, because it is stress for my vocal cords. I think I should do something with intonation, resonance or whatever. It is strange because when I hear myself I always hear a male. But sometimes people on phone identify me as female when they don't know me.

I'm entertained that there has been people listen to my clip. but no comments..

Dear Kelly,

I think that you need to use more of your head voice and less of your chest. Here is a wonderful tool that I am using (and it is working wonders): http://www.genderlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/voicebook020.pdf

You wanted my honest opinion and I am giving you the truth of the matter at hand. :)

Thanks,

Here is a clip of my voice, what are your thoughts?

https://soundcloud.com/jamie-glistenburg/voice-clip-1-2

Mademoiselle, it sounds like your voice might be a bit TOO high- to the point where you are activating the falsetto range and it's pushing you past the 250hz ceiling for female voice range which is why it sounds so high. Maybe try talking from a lower tone (anywhere from F3 - A3). If you can small-i-fy your resonance in this range, it will still sound female even if it's lower than 220hz.

Okay, I guess I'd like to post something up here. I've only just begun Kathe Perez' voice feminization program. With only doing this a few days I think I'm doing pretty well. What do you think?

IMO you're off to a wonderful start for only 2 days!

Your pitch sounds like its in the right range for you. Just keep at it! Resonance, infection, and pitch dynamics could all use some work but duh day 2 I wouldn't expect it to be perfect!

Still a really good start, way to go keep it up :D

Well I seem to be catching this thread right after people post and it feels a little weird being the only one to respond, but here goes anyway!

You've made a big change from your normal voice which is 112hz fundamental frequency (just above A2) to 145hz fundamental frequency (D3). I think that the effect of the difference is more noticeable because you are modifying resonance quite well comparatively. They do sound like two completely different voices. You're off to a great start!

145hz is still well within the male range but with proper training you will get there. Maybe you should try to shoot for a 170-185hz fundamental frequency which is only 3 whole tones higher than your female voice in this recording. I've noticed with pitch a little bit goes a long way, a few notes makes a big difference. Your voice sounds a WHOLE LOT closer, but it's still not quite there yet to pass.

Also, I am no speech therapist. Please take my opinion worth a grain of salt! I'm just doing the best I can to try to help you out :)

Hi there, thanks for the feed back. I dont know what you are talking about with the frequency and a3 and d3 but im still working on it. Since you seem to know, could you explain them in to me? id love to know what i need to get to pitch wise. If you could suggest a note for me to practice and work from that would be fantastic!! Im always scared of going to high(of course).

Absolutely happy to help as much as I can. When I refer to A3 or D3 I am referring to notes on a piano. The letter is the key and the number is the octave. These also directly relate to frequencies...

http://www.phy.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html

Male range is 90-150hz and female range is 190-250hz. I have also seen it notated as 100-150 for males and 200-250 for females. After testing a number of my female friends' normal speaking voices, I have found that a majority of them are actually below 190. Some are as low as 170.

If I were you I'd aim for an F3 or 175hz for now.

This is the average female frequency. A3 or 220hz

If you want to easily speak in a specific range, first try to hum the tone. Then, try to speak a sentence in monotone using nothing but that tone, almost like you are singing the sentence. Then try to speak the same sentence closely to that tone, varying your pitch above and below it.

This is a technique I learned from one of DeepStealth's youtube videos on voice feminization. It has helped me a whole bunch! Also Kathe Perez has a similar exercise within her mp3 tutoring stuff.

Hopefully at the very least other people can benefit from my overly aware state for voice right now!

I just realized I pretty much think about it all day every day. Maybe it's time to see a speech therapist so I can stop focusing on it so much.
