Zara Care, 21, was told that her son, 2, and daughter, 3, would be brought up by their father's parents and that she would never get them back.

The film of the seven-minute fight in public housing in Devon was sent to government social workers by the children's father. Police said everyone who saw the footage was "shocked and stunned."

I am so angry and on the verge of tears so that I don't know what to say to all that.

This is very disturbing as to attempt to destroy the moral fiber of these children by the most vile act conceivable. I'm very happy someone witnessed this crime and had it rectified.

Acts like these are not uncommon. So often, I feel that we are a vile species.

The grandmother brazenly defended the video to police, claiming it was "character-building."

She told officers, "I couldn't see any harm in toughening them up. I done the same with my children."

Well, that explains a lot. There's no excuse for what happened, but it gives you an idea of what the mother grew up with.

It's a good thing grandma got a suspended sentence. I can think of some lovely ladies who would be glad to help her build her character.

I can't believe we let just anyone have kids. You need a license to drive a car. You need a license to sell real estate, to be a doctor, etc. etc. etc. The most important job in the world is raising children and we let anyone do it. I don't mean to make lite of this but good God these people need to be locked up so they can never breed again.

I don't think that follows only because the power of reproduction is not a privilege in the same kind as driving a car. You have to make an effort to get a car, but to get pregnant that's not the case. There's no magical rites or rituals that makes one fertile or not, this is in the scope of biology and not of governance. To extend such powers to the State is to extend your life over to the State. Even though I have a disdain for what happened to the kids as reported in this article in question, that doesn't mean everyone else is automatically guilty in kind. Let the persons hold their own guilt, no one else need be party to it.

Not terribly bright either.  The father found the film because they left it in the camcorder.
