The question was about whether a gender-change procedure that is supposed to turn Steven Stanton into Susan Stanton could also affect his chances at landing the Sarasota job. And like everyone with a city hall connection who was contacted by the Herald-Tribune, Atkins said that a gender change should not influence a job application here, because gender has nothing to do with running the city.

I hope that is so, but it was a question that had to be asked. Stanton had just been booted from the same sort of job in Largo, precisely because of his planned gender change, and that was very well publicized.
