Two years after Oak Reed transgender controversy, Mona Shores to crown king and queen

NORTON SHORES, MI -- Two years after the Oak Reed transgender controversy, Mona Shores High School once again will crown a homecoming king and queen.

After administrators decided to get rid of the king and queen tradition, at least temporarily, students won the right to once again vote for their favorite male and female seniors for the honor, said Mona Shores Public Schools Superintendent Dave Peden.

The kind and queen will be crowned after tonight's homecoming football game.

In 2010, votes for Reed, a transgender student, to become homecoming king were tossed out by school administrators because he biologically was female. That action attracted nationwide attention to the district and the issue of transgender students
